Portuguese wireless broadband operator Zapp has awarded Chinese equipment maker ZTE a E30m contract to roll out WiMAX across Portugal next year.
Zapp aims to offer initial 4G services in Lisbon, Oporto and other undisclosed Portuguese cities by July 2011 in the 3.5GHz frequency.
In addition, ZTE will also upgrade Zapp’s current CDMA network to increase transmission rates and reduce interference.
According to Zapp, the deal is part of a wider partnership agreement between the governments of Portugal and China to increase trade links and technology sharing.
Zapp is part of Dubai-based holding company Saudi Oger Group, which also has telecoms investments in Turkey’s Turk Telekom and Avea, and South Africa’s Cell C.
