Bangladeshi state-owned mobile company Teletalk has been given the green light to launch W-CDMA-based 3G mobile services in the country, according to telecom minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju cited by local reports.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is expected to award W-CDMA licences to private operators at a later point, but no date has been specified yet, Raju reportedly said during a press conference.
The country is currently in talks with the Chinese government to borrow as much as US$211m to update the network infrastructure of struggling Teletalk, according to the Daily Star.
China Exim Bank is expected to stump up the funds at a 2% interest rate with the loan being repayable over a 20-year period.
The 3G licence auction has been delayed for more than two years now, due to political issues, explain the reports.
Teletalk is the smallest operator in Bangladesh, which has six mobile firms, with about a million subscribers.
