The winner of the tender for a third mobile licence in Mozambique will be announced in the first week of November, according to Telegeography quoting transport and communications minister Paulo Zucula.
Portugal Telecom’s mobile unit TMN, Vietnamese company Movitel and UNI-Telecom, a JV of Angola’s Unitel and Mozambique’s Energy Capital, remain in the race for the 15-year licence, whose minimum price has been set at US$25m.
State-owned Mcel and Vodafone-owned Vodacom are currently the two operators providing mobile services to less than six million subscribers out of a population of 23 million.
The Mozambican authorities were not immediately available for comments.
