Movistar Nicaragua, the country’s second largest telco, is suing its only competitor Claro over unfair and anti-competitive practices.
Telefonica of Spain fully owns Movistar, while Claro is owned by Mexican media and telecoms magnate Carlos Slim’s America Movil.
The suit claims that market leader Claro undermined Movistar’s business by replicating its existing offers, only at lower tariffs. Movistar has said that the purpose of its lawsuit is to protect the interests of consumers and users, and defend the interests of the company to continue working for the development of telecommunications in Nicaragua.
Movistar has 90 days to file evidence of Claro’s misdemeanours with the Institute for the Promotion of Competition (Procompetencia), Nicaragua’s anti-monopoly watchdog, which is scheduled to announce its ruling in January 2011.
