Incumbent Deutsche Telekom has selected European vendor Nokia Siemens Networks to begin deploying 800 MHz LTE across Germany.
Initially, the high-speed network will be set up in areas in the country that do not have broadband access of any kind.
“We have already shipped our LTE-capable Flexi Multiradio Base Station to many customers, including almost all of our 3G customers globally,” said Thomas Jul, head of the global Deutsche Telekom customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks.
“We are providing a smooth and cost-efficient transition path to LTE via a software upgrade only.”
NSN expects the LTE roll-out to be completed by the end of 2010.
A Deutsche Telekom spokesman also confirmed Deutsche Telekom’s ongoing talks with mobile operator Vodafone’s German unit and Telefonica’s O2 Germany to join forces in offering LTE services in Germany.
The spokesman added that the company plans to invest around E10bn between 2010 and 2012 in fiber optics, new mobile communications technologies, and IT processes to give customers more speed and new products.
