Nextel, part of US operator Sprint Nextel Corporation’s Argentine unit, has confirmed its interest in the upcoming Argentinean mobile spectrum auction. Ruben Butvilofsky, president of Nextel Argentina said he was waiting for the government to launch the process because he wanted to expand his business in Argentina to business paper, Clarin.
The government plans to award 7.5 MHz in the 850 MHz band and 30 MHz in the 1,900 MHz band. SeCom, the country’s telecommunications regulator ordered Movistar Argentina to return this spectrum as a condition for allowing the merger of its former Unifon unit with Movicom, which it acquired from BellSouth. The merger was completed in 2004.
SeCom also plans to award 90 MHz in the 1,710-1,755 MHz and 2,110-2,155 MHz bands, which is currently being used for fixed telecoms services.
