Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei Technologies has secured a five-year E10m deal with Vodafone Italy to build a broadband research centre in Milan.
According to a Vodafone spokesperson, the partnership will help drive its E1bn plans to roll out high-speed internet across Italy over the next three to four years.
Vodafone’s aim to increase broadband coverage to 1000 more Italian villages and towns comes after plans for a fibre optic JV with local telcos Wind and Fastweb broke down.
Previously, the company had planned to invest E2.5bn with the alternative mobile operators over five years to develop high-speed networks in the country.
However, the partnership fell apart, reportedly because the national NGN committee’s guidelines were seen as favouring the incumbent, Telecom Italia. TI had refused to join a high-speed JV, claiming there was a lack of demand for the network.
