UK-based mobile operator Vodafone reportedly plans to invest E1bn to roll out high-speed internet across Italy over the next three to four years. The development comes after a superfast broadband JV with local telcos Wind and Fastweb broke down.
According to reports, Vodafone aims to increase broadband coverage to 1000 more villages and towns in Italy over three years starting January 2011.
Vodafone, Wind and Fastweb had originally planned to invest a combined E2.5bn over five years to develop fibre-optic networks in the country.
However, the partnership fell apart, reportedly because the national NGN committee’s guidelines were seen as favouring the incumbent, Telecom Italia. TI had refused to join the JV, claiming there was a lack of demand for the network.
Vodafone was unable to comment before press time.
