Leading Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel has signed contracts with vendors Ericsson and Huawei to expand its mobile network in Bangladesh. No financial details were disclosed.
In January, the Indian giant purchased 70% of local mobile operator Warid Telecom for US$300m.
The agreement includes network design, planning, implementation and project management, as well as material and services for the base station sites, the company said in a statement.
Bharti also explained that Ericsson would manage the majority of the company’s network capacity in rural Bangladesh, while Huawei would “swap the existing radio network in the eastern areas of Bangladesh with state of art of technology,” the statement read.
A few days ago, Bharti said it had selected Ericsson India, Nokia Siemens and Huawei to help launch 3G services in India after securing bandwidth to roll out 3G services in 13 of the country’s 22 circles. According to reports, Bharti gave seven zones to Ericsson, and three each to Nokia and Huawei.
