Indian state-owned fixed-line operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has said more funding will be necessary to continue rolling out WiMax across rural India, according to local reports.
The company reportedly told the government that either it should receive an additional Rs2,395 crore (US$539m) or it would have to scale down the project from 7,863 WiMax base stations to just 1,798. BSNL justified the additional funding request by saying that it had to pay a high price for broadband spectrum, according to the Hindu Business Line.
In a separate report yesterday, it was said that vendors ZTE, Huawei, Nokia Siemens Networks and Alcatel-Lucent submitted bids to supply equipment to BSNL.
The report wrote that the equipment would be used to support BSNL’s expansion plan, which aims to add 3.37 million lines in north India and 2.13 million lines in the east.
BSNL could not be reached for comment.
