Fixed-line operator China Telecom is currently in discussions with Indian telcos to build a cable between the two countries, according to the Wall Street Journal citing a China Telecom executive.
Talks are reportedly taking place with Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Tata Communications to build an above-ground cable. The report explains that India and China are already linked by submarine cables, which are however vulnerable to earthquakes.
But Deng Xiao Feng, chairman and chief executive of China Telecom’s international, was quoted as saying that the company would not acquire a network or a stake in an Indian company, due to regulatory issues.
He also said the company was considering deals in the Asia-Pacific region, while adding that the timing was not right yet.
China Telecom was unavailable for comment.
