French incumbent France Telecom is to start building a new submarine cable in the Indian Ocean for broadband internet.
Its subsidiaries Mauritius Telecom, Orange Madagascar and Telkom Kenya, as well as carrier companies Emtel, Societe Reunionnaise du Radiotelephone and STOI Internet are also part of the project.
LION2 (lower Indian Ocean network) will extend the first LION cable to Kenya via Mayotte. LION is already linking Madagascar to La Reunion and Mauritius.
The statement explains that building the cable will cost about E56.5m, of which E31.25m will come from France Telecom.
According to a spokesman for the company, France Telecom’s investment will be funded with equity.
Service is expected to launch in the first half of 2012.
