Research In Motion, manufacturer of BlackBerry smartphone, is still scheduled for UAE service closure on October 11, unless talks with the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority progress.
Local newspaper Emarat Al-Yom quoted an unnamed official at the TRA who said: “The suspension will remain unchanged until we reach a solution that is fully compliant with legislation on telecommunications in the country
The official complained that: “So far, no progress has been made” in the negotiations on allowing the UAE to access encrypted BlackBerry data, and the TRA will suspend BlackBerry services including messenger, web browsing and email unless RIM comes to an understanding.
Saudi Arabia announced a BlackBerry services ban soon after the UAE, but lifted it after the kingdom’s regulator reported progress in finding a solution for its concerns.
There are an estimated 500,000 BlackBerry users in the UAE, which has a population of six million people.
Research In Motion declined to comment and representatives of the TRA were unavailable at the time of going to press.
