US social networking group Facebook has played down rumours it is launching two smartphones next year.
Shortly after Facebook denied last weekend’s blog reports suggesting it was developing an operating system, Bloomberg reported that the group was working with UK-based manufacturer INQ Mobile to launch a European handset by next April, and an American one later in 2011.
The report added that Facebook had yet to decide whether the phones would carry its name.
A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on the INQ speculation, insisting “Our approach has always been to make all phones and apps more social, not build a phone,” a Facebook spokesperson said earlier this week.
“Current projects include everything from an HTML5 version of the site to apps on major platforms to full Connect support with SDKs to deeper integrations with some manufacturers. Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this.”
INQ also declined to comment on the rumours.
