UK mobile operators Vodafone, Orange, T-mobile, O2 and 3 will cover the £100m-plus cost to extend mobile coverage throughout the London Underground network, reported the Sunday Telegraph.
London Mayor Boris Johnson is preparing to announce plans to install and maintain mobile phone reception across the Tube by 2012, when the Olympic Games come to the capital.
Johnson had become impatient about the lack of progress being made between Transport for London (TfL), the government body responsible for London’s underground network, and mobile operators, it is claimed.
A spokesperson for the local government administrative body Greater London Authority said: “TfL and the Mayor of London are currently in discussion with mobile phone operators and other suppliers about the potential provision of mobile phone services on the deep Tube network.
“Given the current pressures on TfL’s budgets any solution would need to be funded through mobile operators with no cost to fare or taxpayers. Discussions are ongoing.”
It is also reported that Johnson is seeking similar coverage for services on the Eurostar, the passenger rail service connecting London with Paris and Brussels.
