German ISP United Internet Group’s webmail services subsidiary GMX has acquired email domain Mail.com from US-based media group MCC for an undisclosed sum.
In addition to the portal, the deal sees GMX receive Mail.com’s 14 million subscribers.
Jan Oetjen, CEO of GMX, said: “The specific strength of this domain is its generic character: You can easily memorize the name Mail.com, it is an attractive and at the same time neutral alternative to provider-oriented address endings such as Hotmail, Yahoo or Google Mail globally.
“On the internationally highly competitive e-mail market we perceive this generic e-mail domain as a unique opportunity for differentiation, which cannot be copied.”
According to GMX, MCC has also agreed on strategic cooperation for its website India.com, which will involve the incorporation of GMX email products.
MCC was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
