Chile’s government has launched an initiative in collaboration with operator Entel designed to bring mobile broadband to rural communities, the partners said in a joint statement.
The plan, named All Chile Connected (Todo Chile Comunicado), is due to benefit 3 million people by the end of 2011 through a network deployed by Swedish equipment supplier Ericsson.
President Sebastian Piñera inaugurated the public-private initiative, the first phase of which is timed to coincide with Chile’s bicentenary celebrations.
The project will require an investment of US$110m, US$45m of which will be provided by the telecommunications development fund, under the administration of telecoms watchdog Subtel, alongside the 15 regional governments involved in the initiative.
The project obliges Entel to guarantee minimum speeds of 1 Mbps, something that will be regulated by the government.
