Italian incumbent Telecom Italia has partnered with European vendor Nokia Siemens Networks to trial LTE technology in Turin.
Italy’s ministry of economic development granted the telco authorisation to use two 20 MHz blocks in the 2500-2690 MHz frequency band for the testing.
Telecom Italia is seeking to fine-tune its transition towards 4G, which will enable the company’s customers to access services including high definition video streaming, video conferencing and online gaming.
“The LTE trial with Telecom Italia on its network in Turin is a step forward for the 4G in the country,” Masimo Mazzocchini, head of Telecom Italia’s customer team in Nokia Siemens Networks, told TelecomFinance.
“Nokia Siemens Networks has simply confirmed its leadership in the LTE technology; our company has already been in fact selected by 17 operators around the world for commercial LTE deployment including Harbinger for the LightSquared network in the US, NTT DOCOMO in Japan, Zain Bahrain, Telenor Denmark, TeliaSonera in the Nordics, Mobily in Saudi Arabia, Elisa in Finland, and Verizon in the US.”
The company added that Turin’s LTE trial will involve a series of tests on 17 new sites in the city centre.
