Irish-owned mobile operator Digicel has launched a WiMax platform for its Jamaican operations.
The service is aimed at Jamaica’s mass consumer market, The Jamaican Observer reported.
Having paid US$1.2m for a licence in the 2.5 GHz band last summer in order to offer 4G broadband speeds, Digicel said it will invest US$22.7m in the first year of the project.
The WiMax network will initially cover 60% of the Jamaican population, across 200 largely urban communities, with further rollout in the planning stage.
Digicel had an existing WiMax network in Jamaica but this was geared at the corporate consumer.
