Telekom Austria is looking to buy network assets to encourage consolidation of the country’s mobile operators, reported Bloomberg.
Citing Telekom Austria CEO Hans Tschuden, the report suggested the company is interested in buying assets including base stations if they become available.
However, Elizabeth Matteson, Telekom Austria’s spokeswoman, played down the comments. Although the company would consider a good acquisitive opportunity, its focus was not in the field of acquisitions, she said.
In other reports, Telekom Austria is said to be subject to a takeover bid from Russian telco MTS.
According to local news sources, an internal working group has been established to evaluate a possible sale.
Matteson categorically denied the rumours. It is also understood that any takeover decision would rest with the country’s government, which resists the idea.
MTS did not return calls to comment before the press deadline.
