LIME, the Caribbean communications provider owned by the UK’s Cable & Wireless, has earmarked US$600m in investments into its regional infrastructure over the next five years.
A US$100m portion is to be invested in Jamaica’s onshore telecoms infrastructure, said local daily newspaper The Jamaica Observer, while US$35m will be spent on an undersea cable linking up the BVI, Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
Chris Dehring, the company’s chairman told the newspaper that ‘while the investment provided opportunities for cost savings derived from completing a fibre ring between Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean, it mainly gives LIME the advantage of benefiting from data traffic between North and South America.’
