Sutel, Costa Rica’s telecoms regulator, has been speaking in the local media about the ongoing process of liberalising the country’s mobile market.
At the moment the market is dominated by state-owned telecoms incumbent Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.
However, the Costa Rican government has been pushing for other operators to enter the sector. Sutel announced that it would be making its decision on the new operators in the next six weeks and the successful parties would have to be prepared to start their operations immediately.
Bidders for the new licences include: Millicom operating under the brand Tigo; America Movil with its Clario brand; Telefonica operating under the Movistar brand; Panama’s Cable & Wireless; and the Caribbean operator Digicel.
