NetOne, the smallest of Zimbabwe’s operator with 250,000 subscribers, boosted its expansion in the country over the last two months by installing several base stations, according to its CEO, Reward Kangai, according to The Herals, a government-owned daily newspaper.
The new areas now covered include Sandawana Mine south of Mberengwa, Mataga as well as Kenmaur in Matebeleland North. This move is expected to help ease congestion on the operator’s network, said Kangai.
Last March, some members of the Zimbabwean government expressed their opposition to the privatisation of NetOne, as they believed the poor performance of the operator was a management issue. At the time, three foreign operators, including South Africa’s MTN, were reportedly in talks to buy a 49% stake in the company.
Kangai was not available for comment.
