Nextel Brasil, the Brazilian operating company of NII Holdings, is hoping to become one of Brazil’s top mobile operators if it wins a 3G licence in the 1,900-2,100MHz frequency band H, BN Americas reported.
Local press, commenting on reports from local telecoms analysts, claim that Nextel Brasil is likely to aggressively participate in the last round of bidding for a Band H licence. Nextel had submitted bids in the last round, which took place in December 2007, but did not win any 3G spectrum.
Nextel may expand its operation nationwide if it acquires 3G spectrum. Until now, the operator has licences to operate in certain regions, local news sources said.
Brazil telecoms watchdog Anatel recently said that launch of this process is imminent. Other companies including France’s Vivendi, Vodafone and Japanese operator NTT Docomo may also participate in the bidding process.
Current mobile operators Vivo (a JV between Portugal Telecom and Telefonica), Claro, Oi and TIM would only be allowed to participate if there are no new interested operators. If this happens, Anatel will offer blocs of 5MHz so operators do not exceed the current limit of 80MHz.
