A LinkOne-led and a TeleTech-led consortium have won a 15-year licence each to provide triple-play services in closed compounds in Egypt.
The former consortium consists of Link Egypt, LinkdotNet and Weather Capital Investment Company, while the latter is made of TeleTech, Vodafone, Aviation Information Technology (AVIT) and Giza Systems Company.
Under the terms of the licence, the new licence holders will build and operator fibre optics networks in closed compounds with no less than 50 units and no more than 5,000 units and they should be established on a total area of at least four feddans. The licences prevent the installation and provision of services in closed compounds exceeding 5,000 units and for closed compounds consisting of less than 50 units, the owner of each compound can decide whether they allow the provision of the services.
Licence holders will have to pay the authorities 8% of their total annual revenues.
Currently, only Telecom Egypt is in a position to offer these services in the country. The successful operators are expected to invest US$1bn within five years to roll out the services.
