Cameroon has reportedly fined the local subsidiaries of MTN and Orange a combined US$160m after anti-corruption commission CONAC found the operators had unpaid taxes. MTN is also facing a US$3.9bn fine in Nigeria for failing to switch off unregistered SIM cards.
Cameroon has reportedly fined the local subsidiaries of MTN (JSE:MTN) and Orange (EPA:ORA) a combined US$160m after anti-corruption commission CONAC found the operators had unpaid taxes.
According to a Reuters report, the telcos are alleged not to have paid the correct tax on income from mobile money transfer, gambling and gaming services.
It is not clear how the US$160m is split between the operators and neither MTN nor Orange replied to requests for comment.
Telcos Camtel and Viettel were also found not to have paid taxes although their fines were not specified.
