US satellite operator ViaSat has snapped up local space-based cyber security specialist EAI Design Services for an undisclosed sum.
EAI Design’s founder Emil Isaakian and its staff will join ViaSat as part of the deal, which includes the group’s encryption products for high-speed networking to 100 Gbps.
The broadband provider has been expanding its cyber security portfolio over the past couple of years alongside its rollout of high throughput satellite services.
It launched its high capacity Ka band satellite ViaSat-1 at the end of 2011, and SpaceX is set to launch its next generation ViaSat-2 bird in the summer of 2016.
The operator’s latest acquisition will also support its distribution of cyber sensing architectures to secure electrical grids and other machine-to-machine projects, according to Jerry Goodwin, ViaSat’s VP of secure network systems.
“These low-power, high-performance security technologies will help us protect data and networks in the evolving internet of everything,” he said.
