Ofcom’s board has announced senior Treasury official Sharon White as its new CEO after the culture secretary, Sajid Javid, approved the appointment.
White will join the UK’s telecoms and media regulator in late March from her position as second permanent secretary at the Treasury, where she is responsible for managing the public finances.
White takes the reins from Ed Richards who will leave at the end of the year, after eight years in the job.
In the interim period, Steve Unger – Ofcom’s director of strategy, international, technology and economist group – will stand in as CEO.
White has 25 years of experience in the public sector and government, including spells in the No 10 Policy Unit and at the World Bank.
She is joining the watchdog at a time when the UK’s telecoms industry is in flux. Yesterday, BT announced it had a deal in principal to acquire the country’s largest mobile operator, EE, to create the country’s first true quad-play operator. More tie-ups could now follow as its rivals look at how they can compete.
Ofcom’s chair, Patricia Hodgson, said: “Sharon brings with her an outstanding combination of intellect, political acumen and experience leading complex public organisations.”
