Tony Navarra has announced his retirement after more than 20 years with US-based mobile satellite operator Globalstar.
Navarra will be stepping down from his role as president of space operations on 2 October 2014, although he will continue as a consultant with the company for a further year.
He was one of Globalstar’s first employees following its formation in 1991 and was an executive vice president with Loral Corporation, one of the MSS operator’s co-founders alongside mobile technology firm Qualcomm.
Prior to joining Loral in 1986, Navarra had served with the US Army, specialising in presidential satellite communications. He also worked in the satellite divisions of electronics company Magnavox and automotive and aerospace group TRW.
During his tenure at Globalstar, Navarra has at various times managed the operating network, product design and development, government and international sales, installation of the ground stations and launching and operating Globalstar’s first and second generation constellations.
Commenting on his departure, Jay Monroe, chairman and CEO of Globalstar, said: “Tony has been a fixture at Globalstar. From the very beginning, he has been a part of the leadership team that made Globalstar a pioneer in the satellite industry; he and his colleagues defined the very architecture and implementation of our network.
“He led groups that recently completed Globalstar’s US$1bn second generation constellation, positioning the company to remain an industry leader for many years to come. Tony has built an exceedingly strong team in satellite engineering and operations, and all of us at Globalstar wish him the very best in his retirement.”
