Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) has announced a new project that would operate satellites in a highly elliptical orbit to serve those areas of Russia in remote northern latitudes.
The project, titled ‘Satellite Communications and Broadcasting System in Highly Elliptical Orbit’, was submitted to a corporate accelerator at the Directors Club for Research and Innovation.
The accelerator has been set up to be a venture capital market development tool for Russian corporations to strategically invest in technology start-ups.
RSCC said its involvement with the accelerator would enable it to obtain an expert assessment of the potential project and to receive investment recommendations on how to implement the project.
In a statement to SatelliteFinance, RSCC explained how it was looking to develop this HEO idea: “RSCC will promote this project further. We believe this system has a high potential in Russia, especially in terms of communication services on mobile objects (maritime and trains) as well as communication services at high latitudes, including the Arctic and the Polar Basin.
“The highly elliptical orbit satellite communications and broadcasting system will enable the company to broaden the range of its services as well as significantly improve its quality and reliability standards in areas that are not accessible for GEO spacecraft.”
The company added that specific details and costs for the system have yet to be decided but based on its preliminary estimates the space segment would comprise 3-4 satellites.
The club accelerator is part of a federal contest called ‘GenerationS’ that was founded by JSC Russian Venture Company, a state-owned fund of funds, and the Moscow Center for Innovative Development.
In the past three months, 589 high-tech project plans have been submitted to the contest. Of these, 40 applications will be selected to take part in an accelerator programme, and the best teams will be asked to present their projects to Russian and foreign investors in October at the GenerationS final at the Moscow International Forum “Open Innovation”.
