Algeria’s government has repeated that it will stop Orascom Telecom from selling its Algerian subsidiary to South Africa’s MTN.
On 28 April, Orascom Telecom announced that it had held talks with MTN about the South African company buying all or part of its collection of operating companies.
Later that day, an Algerian government minister said that the state would prevent any change of ownership of Orascom Telecom Algerie, which trades under the name Djezzy.
Algeria’s trade minister Hachemi Djaaboub became the latest Algerian minister to attack the deal in a statement on Algérie Presse Service on 26 May.
“The Algerian state holds to its right of pre-emption over the sale of Djezzy … and will not allow its purchase by the South African firm MTN,” said Djaaboub.
