UK aerospace and defence technology firm Cobham has unveiled a new satellite communications division after acquiring Danish manufacturer Thrane & Thrane.
The new division combines Cobham’s satcoms assets into one unit, and builds on its £275m (US$455m) acquisition of the Danish firm earlier this year.
Called Cobham SATCOM, the unit will be headquartered in Denmark and led by Thrane & Thrane CEO Walther Thygesen. It will be supported by Cobham’s other satcoms assets in South Africa, California and Florida.
According to the group, Cobham SATCOM is twice the size of either its legacy satcoms businesses or Thrane & Thrane before the merger.
Richard Tyson, president of the group’s aerospace and security division, which includes Cobham SATCOM, said: “The integration of the businesses is going well, with teams focused on how best to bring together complementary product lines and routes to market so that we can grow the business further.
“As the demand for airborne, land-mobile and maritime satellite communications continues to increase, we’re working hard to make it easier for customers to buy from us a wider range of satcom equipment and integrated solutions.”
Lars Thrane, who founded Thrane & Thrane, has recently announced plans to step down from its board at the end of November following the deal.
