Almost a year since he took over as chief executive of satellite infrastructure start-up O3b Networks, Mark Rigolle is to return to SES. Another SES alumni Steve Collar is to replace him.
Collar was previously SVP of Business and Market Development for SES World Skies and will be tasked with taking O3b through its operational phase. At SES, he expanded the business’ satellite and service portfolio, including the design of new spacecraft and products. He also oversaw the company’s the long-range strategic planning activities and was instrumental in SES’ investment in O3b.
Rigolle’s role as O3b CEO was very different. Effectively his job was to complete the US$1.2bn debt and equity financing the company required to launch commercial services.
Commenting the executive change, the former SES CFO said: “Having completed the financing of the business, I am pleased to be returning to SES with O3b on a solid footing to move forward.
“In reaching financial close, securing the customer base, renegotiating major vendor contracts and building the O3b organisation, I believe the company now has the foundation it needs to execute its business plan. Steve is a seasoned satellite industry professional and I have every confidence he will lead O3b in to successful operations.” Collar will formally take up his new position on 7 March 2011.
It is unclear what position Rigolle will take up at SES given that Andrew Browne is the satellite operator’s current CFO.
