UK-based satellite communications equipment provider SatCom has acquired Abbey Technologies, a Switzerlandbased software developer, for an undisclosed sum.
For the past 19 months, Abbey has been supporting SatCom, a distributor for Inmarsat, Iridium, Thuraya and VSAT operators, to develop a suite of products to support its delivery of satellite communications.
Under the brand Horizon, the products aim to offer low-cost, simplified satellite services through an ultra-low bandwidth VoIP.
“The acquisition will accelerate the development of this state of the art platform with new resources, scale, and support from a satellite industry leader,” said Brian Collins, founder of Abbey Technologies, who will become CTO of SatCom following the acquisition. According to SatCom, the acquisition also transfers the Horizon intellectual property to the group, which it plans to use to expand into new markets.
