Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved plans for a second national communications satellite to be launched in by 2012, according to a government statement.
As with the first satellite, Vinasat-1, Vinasat-2 will be operated by Vietnam Post and Telecoms Group, the country’s national telco. The new satellite will cost US$290-350m.
It will be positioned at 107E, one of three slots Vietnam acquired rights to in 2008. Under the terms of use, Vietnam must occupy another slot by 2012 or it will lose its remaining rights to other countries.
Vinasat-1 was built by Lockheed Martin and was launched in 2012. According to the government, it is currently operating at 70% capacity. It serves telcos, government ministries and TV stations.
