AT&T looks to rent towers from Telesites in Mexico
US incumbent AT&T reportedly plans to rent towers in Mexico from America Movil’s tower spinoff unit Telesites to help expand its wireless network in the country.
The potential agreement would give the telco access to about 11,000 wireless towers, the most extensive network in Mexico, Bloomberg cited people familiar with matter saying.
AT&T entered the Mexican market in January this year with its US$2.5bn purchase of third-largest mobile operator Iusacell and, just weeks later, agreed to buy Nextel Mexico for US$1.875bn.
The Dallas-based telco aims to create the first ‘North American Mobile Service Area’ covering more than 400 million customers and business in the US and Mexico.
An AT&T spokesperson was cited saying the company’s priority is to expand its network and enhance its mobile internet offering.
“As we assess our options, we expect fair pricing, an expedited process, and efficient access similar to other tower companies.”
AT&T and America Movil were not immediately available for comment.
America Movil shareholders approved the tower spinoff in April, with Telesites initially expected to list its shares on the Mexican bourse this June. However, the Mexican telco told analysts earlier this month that the IPO was likely to be delayed until late summer.
Telesites will offer new tenants the same rental price as AMX’s wireless unit Telcel.
