French economy minister Emmanuel Macron has said it is not the right time for four-to-three consolidation.
Speaking to Les Echos, he described the industry as having reached a “point of equilibrium”. Companies should focus on investment rather than M&A, which can reduce the amount of equipment, number of networks and jobs, he said.
Orange, Numericable-SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free “each have their place”, and are focused on 4G and fibre upgrades, he noted.
This comes after years of expectation that the market would shrink from four players to three, with Bouygues the obvious target.
Martin Bouygues, however, has vehemently stated that he wants to remain the owner of that asset.
