Searchlight Capital Partners has hired Doug Hutcheson, formerly CEO of Leap Wireless, to advise on TMT investments.
Hutcheson was CEO of Leap, the fifth largest US mobile network operator, until its sale to AT&T in 2014.
During his 16 years at Leap, Hutcheson oversaw strategy, operations, relationships and partnerships.
He is also CEO and a director of Laser Inc, an affiliate of AT&T set up to house certain Leap assets such as 700 MHz spectrum, which must be divested.
Searchlight co-founder Eric Zinterhofer said: “Doug’s industry acumen and leadership skills will substantively enhance our investment efforts in the telecom and media sectors.”
Searchlight was founded by senior partners from Apollo (Zinterhofer), KKR (Oliver Haarmann), and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (Erol Uzumeri) in 2010. Its portfolio includes Puerto Rican cableco Liberty Cablevision, Alaskan telecoms operator GCI and Oregon-based fibre-optic network group Integra Telecom.
