Telekom Malaysia (TM) has secured an MoU with local fixed-line player Time dotCom to build a 4 Tbps submarine cable across the country.
Called SKR1M, the cable will run from Peninsular Malaysia to the west of the country to Sabah and Sarawak to the east.
The government awarded TM with a contract to build SKR1M late last year in a public private partnership with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. The operator said its decision to bring in Time supports government ambitions to foster partnerships with industry players.
The project’s partners are now on the hunt for a preferred technology partner to help supply, deliver and implement the network.
TM already owns more than 10 submarine systems, spanning over 100,000 fibre-route miles across the world, and expects to launch the new cable commercially by mid-2017.
It also recently announced plans to launch an Islamic bond programme worth up to US$750m for capital expenditure, business operating requirements or other Shariah-compliant purposes.
