The CEO of Caribbean-focused telco Digicel Group’s Panama unit, David Butler, is to take the helm of the Jamaican business.
Butler will transition into the role over the coming weeks, Digicel said in a statement.
Butler first joined Digicel in the Caribbean in 2003 and served as CEO of its operations in the Pacific islands of Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji before becoming head of Digicel Panama.
He replaces Barry O’Brien, who has been promoted to the role of director of business development for Digicel Caribbean and Central America as well as board director for Digicel Barbados.
O’Brien has been with Digicel for seven years and headed up the Jamaican unit for two. He has previously served as CEO of Digicel Barbados and regional CEO of Digicel in Barbados, Dominica, St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent.
The company noted that, during O’Brien’s tenure as CEO of Digicel Jamaica, the team implemented various elements of its strategy to become “a total communications and entertainment company”, acquiring regional broadcaster SportsMax TV and cable company Telstar, deploying a fibre-to-the-business network and launching mobile advertising services.
Digicel is present in 32 markets internationally – 26 in the Caribbean and Central America and six in Asia Pacific.
