Japan’s Softbank is merging its four domestic telecoms subsidiaries to streamline its operations in the country’s saturated mobile market.
Softbank Mobile, which provides mobile services under the Softbank brand, will be the surviving company after Softbank BB, Softbank Telecom and Ymobile are dissolved.
Softbank BB provides broadband under the Yahoo BB brand, Softbank Telecom offers fixed line and data communications, and Ymobile uses the Y!mobile brand for its mobile services.
“The four companies subject to the merger have been working on mutually utilising each other’s communications networks, distribution channels and other resources, and enhancing the collaboration for the services,” said the parent group.
“Through the merger, the company will seek to maximise its corporate value by further concentrating business resources owned by the four companies subject to the merger, and enhance competitiveness of the domestic telecommunications businesses … It will also expand its business jointly with other Softbank Group companies, in areas such as IoT (Internet of Things), robotics, and energy.”
The group has set a tentative 1 April 2015 deadline for completing the merger, subject to shareholder approvals.
