The managing director of nascent Indian mobile operator Reliance Jio Infocomm, Sandip Das, is stepping down from the role to join the board of Reliance Retail, also part of conglomerate Reliance Industries.
In his new role, Das will “mentor” the Jio division of Reliance Retail, Reliance chairman and billionaire Mukesh Ambani said in an email to staff.
Ambani said Das’ knowledge of marketing and sales, particularly in telecoms, well places him to mentor the retail unit as it seeks to increase sales and distribution channels, including retail stores, for LTE-capable devices.
Das, who joined Jio in 2013 after serving as CEO of Malaysian operator Maxis, said he requested the move for personal reasons.
Reliance Jio, the latest entrant in India’s already crowded mobile market, aims to launch 4G services early this year. The operator agreed to pay US$1.7bn to secure 1,800 MHz spectrum in the February 2014 auction, adding to its existing 2,300 MHz frequencies. The company has also inked multiple infrastructure-sharing agreements with rivals.
