The Vietnamese government has green-lit a proposal by state-owned Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) to split into three units.
VNPT-Net will specialise in fixed line and satellite; VNPT-Vinaphone on mobile, IT and media products and services; and VNPT-Media will focus on the research and development of software and value-added products, according to local media citing the government office.
The restructure comes ahead of the privatisation of local mobile operator MobiFone, which was spun off from VNPT last year.
Malaysian telecoms giant Axiata is the latest group to reportedly have an interest in taking a chunk of MobiFone. A foreign entity will be able to take a stake of up to 49% in the group once it lists.
Axiata did not respond to a request to comment on the speculation.
Back in October, Norway’s incumbent telco Telenor and Comvik International Vietnam were reported to have told the country’s government of their interests in taking a controlling stake in MobiFone.
