Venezuela’s telecoms regulator Conatel has granted 4G spectrum licences to three local telcos including state-backed Movilnet, Telefonica’s Movistar, and DirecTV’s Galaxy Entertainment.
New entrant Multiphone, which had prequalified to take part in the auction, did not feature among the winning bidders.
The Venezuelan government, which raised VeB4.6bn (US$729m) in the auction, tendered two frequency blocks in the 1,710-2,170 MHz band and four blocks in the 2,500-2,690 MHz band.
Licences will be valid for up to 15 years. Rollout conditions include a 70% coverage of the population by 2019.
Besides Movilnet and Movistar, Telvenco’s Digitel GSM also operates a mobile network and already provides 4G services.
