Tanzanian mobile operators are reportedly expected to list by early 2015, following regulatory changes aimed at encouraging IPOs on the local bourse.
The country’s deputy communication, science and technology minister, January Makamba, was quoted telling Reuters that the process is in its final stages.
In 2010, the Tanzanian government passed a law requiring existing telcos to list by 2013, while new telecoms companies would have to do so within three years from being granted their licences, in a bid to improve corporate governance and disclosure, as well as boost local economy.
But legal and regulatory hurdles reportedly delayed any listing moves.
Tanzania’s main mobile players are Vodacom Tanzania, a subsidiary of South Africa’s Vodacom, Airtel, Millicom-controlled Tigo and Etisalat-owned Zantel.
Vodacom Tanzania’s managing director, Rene Meza, reportedly confirmed that the company was participating in the consultation process on the draft IPO regulations.
The communication ministry could not be reached to elaborate on the matter.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese state-owned operator Viettel has recently been granted a licence to build a 3G mobile network in the country. The operator reportedly expects to launch services in July next year.
