Singapore-based telco SingTel has promoted Allen Lew to CEO of its Australian mobile and satellite operator Optus amid wider changes to the group’s organisation structure.
Lew, currently head of SingTel’s mobile solutions division Digital L!fe, will replace Paul O’Sullivan as he becomes chairman of Optus from 1 October.
O’Sullivan was made CEO of Australia’s second-largest wireless player in March on an interim basis following the departure of Kevin Russell, a former CEO of UK mobile operator Three. O’Sullivan had already led Optus between 2004 and 2012.
Chua Sock Koong, CEO of the SingTel group, said: “After 10 years at the helm of Optus, Paul has expressed his desire for a change to a non full-time role.
“As the chairman of Optus, Paul continues to be a strong advocate for our Australian business with his solid experience and knowledge. Paul will deepen our engagement with key stakeholders in the government and business community.”
SingTel, the largest listed company on the Singapore Exchange by market capitalisation, also announced other leadership changes designed to strengthen its consumer business.
Jonathan Auerbach, who led advisers McKinsey & Company’s Asian TMT operations, will become CEO of Digital L!fe, while SingTel CFO Jeann Low is adding responsibilities for group strategy and group general counsel to her current portfolio.
Supporting her will be Lim Cheng Cheng, who is currently managing director of group strategic investments but will be appointed deputy CFO.
Meanwhile, SingTel’s CEO of enterprise Bill Chang is adding the responsibility of country chief officer to his portfolio, which will see him be the principal liaison with local and regulatory bodies.
The heads of SingTel’s consumer businesses will report directly to the group CEO under its new structure.
The direct reports to the CEO are: consumer Singapore CEO Yuen Kuan Moon, consumer international CEO Mark Chong, group CTO Tay Soo Meng, group HR director Aileen Tan, and group CIO Wu Choy Peng.
“The restructure combines retention of existing management strength and experience with new leadership talent,” said Chua.
“Our team will advance the SingTel group’s transformation strategy to sustain growth, competitiveness and innovation into the future.”
