Qualcomm has filed an application to bid in India’s broadband wireless access auction.
In doing so, it becomes the first foreign firm to enter the fray.
India will auction two segments of radio bandwidth for wireless broadband, with the base price for one pan-India slot pegged at UD$385m.
If successful, Qualcomm said it would seek out local partners with whom to build a network.
In a statement, the firm said: “Qualcomm and its partners will decide the venture’s strategy in due course. Qualcomm’s goal is to attract an operator partner or partners into the venture at the appropriate time for construction of a TD-LTE network in compliance with the Indian Government’s rollout requirement for the BWA spectrum and then to exit the venture.”
