Naushad Merali, the chairman of mobile operator Airtel Kenya, has retired after 15 years at the company.
Merali founded Kencell, now known as Airtel Kenya, with France’s Vivendi in 1999.
The company changed hands many times over the years before being bought, along with several other African operations, by India’s Bharti Airtel from Zain in a US$10.7bn deal in 2010.
Merali is a well-known Kenyan entrepreneur and head of the Sameer Group, a conglomerate with activities in transport, construction, agriculture, ICT, telecoms and finance.
In April, Adil El Youssefi joined Airtel Kenya as managing director, replacing Shivan Bhargava.
