Alan Knott-Craig has returned to South African operator Cell C as executive board member after suffering a stroke in November last year.
He has however stepped down from his position as CEO. Jose Dos Santos, who has been serving as acting CEO for the last five months, has now been confirmed in the role.
In his new position Knott-Craig, who first joined Cell C in April 2012, will consult and advise on matters relating to Cell C but also Oger Telecom Group, its UAE-based parent, the company said.
Cell C is the third-largest mobile operator in South Africa and has been faced with tough competition from Vodacom and MTN, its two much-larger rivals. Telkom is the smallest player.
Knott-Craig had previously called for regulatory changes and supported the idea of consolidation to help the smaller operators.
