Malaysian telco Green Packet, which is selling its stake in local WiMax operator Packet One (P1), will reportedly announce the name of the acquirer this month.
The shortlist of suitors includes local telcos Digi, YTL and Telekom Malaysia, according to the Malaysian Reserve citing sources.
The companies were not immediately available for comment.
Green Packet has a 57% stake in P1. The other large shareholders in the wireless player are South Korea’s SK Telecom (26%) and Intel (5%).
Suggestions that Green Packet was open to selling its majority stake in P1 for MR1bn (US$306m) emerged last year.
P1, number five is Malaysia, was the first company in the country to launch a commercial WiMax service in 2008 and Digi was said to be eyeing its precious 2,300 MHz spectrum.
A deal with either Digi or YTL would consolidate the Malaysian mobile market, currently home to eight operators. If Telekom Malaysia were to acquire stake, the internet and multimedia company would be able to re-enter the mobile sector after exiting Celcom in 2008.
